CGRE mourns and stands in solidarity as Roe + Casey overturned
Today’s decision by the Supreme Court is unsurprising and wholly devastating– as reproductive health, rights and justice movement leaders foretold. This ruling is part of a coordinated set of attacks on our fundamental rights, is rooted in white supremacy, and takes a sledgehammer to our democracy.
The ability to choose if, when, and how to have children is fundamental to gender and reproductive equity and a functioning, participatory democracy. The end of Roe and overturn of Casey will hit hardest in communities of color, for women, people with low incomes, young people and LGBTQ folks who already experience significant barriers to accessing abortion care. Now more than ever funders must meet the urgent need to support reproductive justice advocates, abortion clinics and providers, practical support groups and funds, and legal services. And we must strengthen the foundation of the long fight for reproductive freedom with investments at the state and local levels. Our path forward lies in the state legislatures, in the state courts, in the increased capacity of service providers and advocates, and in building long-term power in communities hit hardest by this ruling but also nationwide.
We grieve this historic setback in solidarity with our grantee partners. And we remain more committed than ever to investing in abortion access as we fight to ensure that every person has access to abortion care regardless of their race, gender, zip code or economic background.
