Collaborative for Gender + Reproductive Equity Announces $25 Million Gift from MacKenzie Scott
New funding will go toward investments in grassroots and frontline organizations fighting for gender, reproductive and racial equity
The Collaborative for Gender + Reproductive Equity (CGRE), a community of donors and foundations uniting to advance gender, reproductive and racial equity, today announced that they had received a $25 million unrestricted gift from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott.
The gift comes amid historic threats to gender, reproductive and racial equity, including targeted efforts by state governments to limit the reproductive autonomy and political power of marginalized communities around the country. The new resources will amplify CGRE’s support for on-the-ground movement partners in order to advance equity and counter attacks on reproductive care. CGRE’s strategies are guided by its commitment to supporting those centering the needs of directly impacted communities.
“This generous gift could not come at a more critical time, when abortion access is under severe threat and the multiple stressors on women in the workplace have been laid bare by COVID-19. In addition to our ongoing investments in our partners to build grassroots power at the state level, bring equity to our courts system and respond quickly to new challenges and opportunities, this funding will allow us to better meet the needs of the organizations and leaders who are best positioned to advance a gender, reproductive and racial equity agenda nationwide,” said Margaret Hempel, Executive Director of the Collaborative for Gender + Reproductive Equity.
“We are grateful to MacKenzie Scott for recognizing and investing in the critical work CGRE grantees are doing to advance gender and reproductive equity and to help families and communities thrive long-term. With less than two percent of charitable dollars going toward advancing gender equity and the rights of women and girls, we hope more funders will give generously to support, empower and improve the lives of women,” said Lisa Eisen, Advisory Committee Chair of the Collaborative for Gender + Reproductive Equity.
