Movement Power

We provide flexible, multi-year support to organizations securing policy and programmatic wins at the state level, protecting access in critical states, and supporting grassroots progress in restrictive environments.

Often, investments in movement power are short-term, reactionary stopgaps. This support can’t sustain the momentum our movement leaders need to create lasting change.

CGRE supports organizations in key states before, during, and beyond urgent moments, so they are able to respond to threats in real time and continue their power-building work into the future — supporting their communities in the ways they know best.

Our Movement Power strategy is rooted in the belief that advancing gender, reproductive, and racial equity requires a strong, connected, and well-resourced ecosystem of organizations working across issues and geographies. Through this targeted strategy, we aim to build long-term power by:

  • Elevating the leadership of gender-focused organizations within the civic engagement, advocacy, and movement-building sectors.
  • Protecting and expanding access to reproductive health care.
  • Investing in targeted, locally driven policy engagement that builds influence and momentum within communities.
  • Strengthening cross-sector alignment by deepening relationships and shared understanding between gender, reproductive, and racial equity leaders and those working in democracy reform and economic justice.

Together, these approaches are building a durable, intersectional movement with the power and reach to make a material difference in people’s lives.

Supporting Long-Term Movement Building

CGRE has made meaningful, long-term investments in community-led strategy, coalition work, and civic engagement in New Mexico. The work of grantee partners has resulted in a community where strong networks of organizations work together, advancing specific policy priorities like paid family and medical leave, economic security measures, and the development of a holistic model of reproductive health care that centers the needs of historically marginalized communities. Examples of policy wins include the passage of bills to protect abortion providers and expand abortion access and gender affirming care; legislation that overturned a dormant 1969 ban on most abortion procedures, ensuring abortion access in a post-Roe landscape; and passage of a comprehensive voting rights bill.

“As a strategic thought partner, CGRE’s investment in [our organization's] organizing, advocacy and civic engagement work has bolstered our ability to fight the good fight in the Lone Star State. CGRE’s unique and transformative funding has not only impacted the scope of our programmatic work but has provided the opportunity to focus on capacity building, infrastructure expansion and long-term visioning for the larger progressive movement in our state." Movement Power Grantee Partner

Support from CGRE is made by invitation only; we do not accept unsolicited proposals. We are grateful to our grantee partners who navigate the current environment and provide critical leadership in the pursuit of gender, reproductive, and racial equity.
